glock 81

Glock 81 - In my previous review of the Aircrew Survival Knife, I mentioned other options for the same price range. This review is about one of them, the Glock Field Knife.

The Glock Field Knife has replaced the Aircrew Survival Knife as my primary camping knife. They come in two versions: the Model 81, which has teeth machined into the spine, and the Model 78, which does not have saw teeth. Like Glock pistols, Glock knives are made in Austria and are incredibly durable. But even better,  they retail for around $30.

The Glock knife has a 6.25 inch blade made of 1095 spring steel with very good heat treatment. Although it's dull out of the box, it's not difficult at all to put a big bank on it and holds the edge well in use. Although 1095 steel is very tough, it will rust. The black phosphate coating works well to prevent corrosion, but it wears off after prolonged use and does not clearly cover the cutting edge. That is why it is important to clean and lubricate the blade from time to time. At 3/8 inch thick, the blade is strong enough to handle most tasks, and the length gives it the ability to grip and split wood. Because the blade is only 27/32 inches wide, it's also quite light. Actually lighter than a short aircrew rescue knife. This long, straight blade has almost no stomach except towards the tip, making it less than ideal for cooking purposes such as cutting vegetables. The attachment point of this knife is quite well designed. It is quite wide and does not come to a good point. This makes it less prone to cracking, but still quite sharp. Interestingly, the saw teeth on the spine of this knife actually work. The cross-sectional design seems to help prevent them from closing. Obviously it's no substitute for a real saw, but I've found it time and time again.

Glock Field Knife 81 (replica) ??

Glock knife grips are made from the same polymer as Glock pistol frames. It is a very durable material, both heat resistant and electrically insulating. At the bottom of the handle is a small compartment where you can store a few small items. It's not very easy to open and it's very small, so I haven't found a use for it yet. The plastic cover is not particularly strong and is not particularly suitable for hammer use. It's also worth noting that while this knife doesn't use perfect construction, that's not a problem. As the folks at knifetests.com have shown, the knife will wear down to the polymer handle with heavy use. That's nice to know, especially since they make weapons out of this stuff. As an added bonus, the cross guard has a built-in bottle opener that works quite well.

The sheath is also made from the same Glock polymer and is cleverly designed. Besides being light and tough as nails, it has two features that I particularly liked. First is the seat belt fastening system. The belt clip opens so that the sheath can be attached and detached without having to remove the belt, but it attaches very securely without the risk of accidentally losing the knife. Another feature is the retention system. The shell has a special clip that locks securely into the double sided slots on the cross guard. There is no risk of the knife accidentally falling, yet it can be removed with one hand. The sheath also has a drainage hole and a small retaining loop at the end. The attachment loop is for attaching a leg to, and while I don't use it for that purpose, I find it useful for attaching a length of parachute cord wrapped around the shell.

In general, I rate the Glock knife very highly as an all-around/survival knife. In fact, I put it at the top of the list for low price and durable knives. They're tough enough to use for really demanding projects, light enough for long trips, and cheap enough that I don't mind abusing it to get the job done.
